What is a “token board” and should I use one?

A token board (or token economies) is very similar to a common sticker chart. It gives the child a visual cue to remind them that a reinforcer (or reward) is getting closer. At the start it is very important to remember that the sticker or the token is not the reward (although we will also provide lots of praise while giving the child a token so eventually it will but exciting) but instead it is the thing that they are going to get once they have all of their tokens. For example, TV time, a new toy, dessert, etc. Token boards are a great way to increase the amount of time a child must wait before the child can access a preferred item or activity.
